The public comment period for the 2025 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (PFS) and Quality Payment Program (QPP)proposed rule is underway. Of major concern to physicians is the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) proposal to enact an additional 2.8 percent Medicare payment reduction on January 1, 2025. The Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) opposes this cut. MSMS will be submitting formal comments and encourages you to do so as well. The deadline is September 9, 2024.
The American Medical Association (AMA) recently released an analysis of the proposed rule, which summarizes key policy proposals. Read the AMA document here to learn more about the proposal including:
- The annual conversion factor
- Changes to Medicare telehealth
- Changes to the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS), including maintaining the current performance threshold
- New coding and payment proposals for services such as advanced primary care management services
- Updates to the Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP)
MSMS recently met with CMS staff who indicated that CMS is wanting to hear from physicians about the potential impact of the proposed rule on care delivery, accessibility, and administrative burdens. It is important to remember that CMS reviews all comments as they work to finalize the CY2025 PFS. Therefore, comments from physicians, MSMS, the AMA, and others can influence the outcome of the final PFS and QPP rule, which is typically released in November of each year. Submit your comments online by September 9th.
